An earlier note to myself- Some time ago my psychiatrist said some of his patients were having trouble misunderstanding people on the internet. Because I assumed he meant people who knew each other in person I suggested they didn’t make themselves clear. It was left at that. I recently had a long internet conversation with someone I had never met in person and I now understand what my doctor’s patients meant. My guess is they were talking to strangers, learning about each other on the internet. There is no body language on the Net - you see neither a smile nor a shrug a smirk nor a wink from either participant. For the most part we don’t speak “off the cuff” or blurt out impulsive thoughts or feelings on the internet. It seems to me we only give and get a certain percentage of ourselves. It is a tricky business. Ripe for misunderstandings.
